You know that horrible feeling that you get when you forget or lose something important?

It feels like someone kicked me in the gut when this happens. It can be as simple as placing my phone or wallet in the wrong pocket. I may as well have been robbed at gunpoint. I’m pretty sure that it feels the same.

This morning, as I was stowing away my bags on the plane in Boston, I realized that my backpack was missing. I was overcome with instant panic. At first, I wasn’t sure where I had left it. My guess was that I had set it down when I’d come through security. I told my captain that I’d be right back and ran as fast as possible through the airport, back to the security checkpoint. I then discovered that nobody had seen a bag left behind.

This was horrible! I had left it back at the hotel! Thankfully, we stayed at a hotel next to the airport- I wouldn’t need a cab or a shuttle to get me back there. Also, my first flight was only booked for 37 people. This meant that I just might have time to sprint all the way back to the hotel, find the bag, and make it back to my plane before it was too late. It might be possible.

Let me tell you this- if you had been inside Boston’s Logan Airport this morning, you would have seen the absolute fastest mad-dash out of the airport and to the hotel. I can only imagine that I had a look of dread on my face. Here’s the thing: As a flight attendant, if I cause a delayed flight, that could result in disciplinary action, which could turn into suspension or worse. I’m about 12 1/2 years into this career, and I don’t plan on retiring anytime soon.

Now you’re beginning to understand why I was in such a hurry to find my bag. A bag, which by the way, contained my flight attendant manual (iPad), an item that I’m illegal to fly without. Not to mention my personal iPad, laptop, and wallet. If I had left any other bag, it wouldn’t be the end of the world- Walmart can provide most of what I need when I’m on a work trip.

I make it to my room on the 5th floor, only to find out that my missing bag isn’t in there. I get to the front desk, show my i.d., and ask for another room key. I run back down to the desk clerk and ask if any black backpacks have been turned in. She calls security, they tell her they have my bag! I’m so thankful, but now, as I’m waiting for them to bring my bag, I’m looking at my watch. The time was now two minutes past when I was supposed to be on the plane to start boarding.

Finally, my bag arrives and now comes another sprint back to my plane. I realize that it is taking longer for hotel security to bring me my bag than it took me to run from the aircraft- all the way back to the hotel. I’m relieved that the bag is on its way but very worried I’m about to cause my first delayed flight. My mind starts to wander- I’m wondering which airlines are hiring right now if this all goes from bad to worse. Delta would let me be based in Salt Lake City or Seattle- now there’s an idea! British Air or Emirates would be a blast! However, I don’t think either of these airlines want flight attendants from the United States.

I made it back to the plane about 15 minutes late, but with plenty of time to board 37 passengers and still push back from the gate early! I am incredibly grateful that a potentially harmful situation was avoided and that I made it back with time to spare! Sometimes I’m such an airhead!

Tonight I ended up at Dulles International Airport and am staying in Herndon, Virginia. I just finished some fish tacos (pretty good, not great) and am looking forward to a night of deep sleep. Before I nod off, I thought I’d talk about another item on my bucket list.

Once upon a time, I had set “attend a circus” as one of my bucket list items (number 16, to be exact). Then you learn about circuses and what goes on there, the cruel treatment of the animals, etc. I’ve decided to change this. Instead, I’d like to attend a Cirque Du Soleil performance.

I watched the television “reality” series called Verekai (sp?), and it was fascinating to see a lot of what goes on behind the scenes. It’s impressive to look into the lives and backgrounds of these performers as well. I figure that it’s time to go see a live performance. Let’s see what is playing right now in Vegas.

Since my last post, I’ve been on a couple of work trips. Sadly, I have to be in a certain mood to update this blog. Whatever the opposite of writer’s block is- that’s the mood I have to be in. Hmmm, I’ll call it writer’s flow. Tonight I’m in Brighton, Colorado, at my crashpad and am feeling a little bit of the flow, so I’m going to take advantage of the situation and here is an update for you.

Coming in at number 87 on the bucket list is to ride on the Silverton Train. One memory I have from when I was young is listening to my cousin Carrie’s C.W. McCall album for. I’d close my eyes and these songs would transport me to another place and time. They remind me of home. Sadly, Carrie has since passed away but I’m happy to have found C.W. McCalls’ Greatest Hits album on iTunes.

After a mostly enjoyable and relaxing two weeks off, it’s time to return to work. I noticed that my bank account needs more deposits and less withdrawals- that’s the idea anyway. As good as it is to be in the air again (I do miss it when I have this much time off) the horrible part is that I’m working a p.m. shift. This is not where I want to be in the evenings when passengers drink more alcohol, flights are more likely to be delayed, and just the fact that that I would rather not be on a plane when I could be hunting for a new restaurant somewhere.

I traded my original a.m. trip for this one because it pays a lot more. The more time I’m in the sky, the more money I make. So on behalf of myself, and my mortgage company, I thank you for choosing Southwest Airlines. The fact that this trade meant one more night in my own bed was a good reason to trade, as well.

So far I’ve worked two legs and I don’t want to kill anyone. This is a pleasant surprise! I guess my dread wasn’t warranted after all  That could change since we’re on our way to Los Angeles. I lucked out- plus, I’m working with a great crew!

fullsizeoutput_36f9Today I’ve continued the long process of scanning all the loose sheet music that I’ve collected over the years. I started this process a few years ago, got busy doing other things, and am just now getting started again. The fact that that hard drive is now dead doesn’t help the situation, either. I was reminded about this when my cousin, Cindy Lynn asked everyone on facebook how they stored their sheet music.

This reminder was perfect timing since I’m not traveling for work at the moment. I managed to get so much done today, including about 15 songs scanned in, and I even got a decent cardio workout to boot! That’s two days in a row! This is getting close to a record for me.

fullsizeoutput_26f5So- here’s to my next adventures: I just sent over all my information I just signed up to become an Uber driver. No, I’m not going to quit the flight attendant gig- I love it way too much! I’m thinking that maybe this will allow me to spend an extra night or two in my own bed. It’s not that I don’t enjoy spending most nights of my adult life in a hotel bed (literally), but there’s no place like home.

Do you use Uber? I have used it many times, in many different cities, and even once in Edinburgh, Scotland. For the most part, it’s been a good experience. If this works out, perhaps I’ll drive for Lyft too.

Need a ride somewhere?

Tonight has been a great evening! One of my friends sent me a link to a song on YouTube and told me that I just had to listen to it. The one he showed me was good, but not as powerful for me, as it had been for him. The next thing I know, I’ve been sucked into the internet, looking for meaningful music videos. I love a live performance where the artist sounds every bit as good as he/she sounds in the studio. This has been going on for about an hour and a half now.

Tonight I’m thankful for the gift of beautiful music. I have no idea where or what I’d be without good music in my life. Actually, when I think about it, I know exactly what I’d be without music, and let’s just say that it not good. Music has saved me more times than I know. I’m thankful that my mom putting me in piano lessons at such a young age.

I thought I’d post a performance that touched me. On Kelly Clarkson’s album, her song Piece by Piece is much more produced- sometimes I pay more attention to a song when it’s stripped down to a simple, beautiful accompaniment, and a pure lyric. A full orchestra or studio production isn’t needed. Hope you enjoy!

screen-shot-2016-01-29-at-01-58-33I will not advise you that you need to watch the movie In Bruges. If I were to do this, you would no doubt think less of me. The movie is filled with the absolute most foul language and a so much violence. The characters in this movie give no care for a human life. Truth be told, I haven’t seen very many movies this violent or vulgar. It definitely earned the ‘R’ rating that it received.

I also need to say that this is an excellent movie! I think this is so because of witty dialogue, brilliant acting, and my favorite part is the location. Bruges looks to be a very beautiful town. Check out the image search on Google. My brother-in-law Joe told me that he has been there and I’m a little bit jealous of this fact. Therefore, coming in at number 10 on my bucket list is to go to Bruges.

I’ve been making backups of my old pictures, and I came across this priceless image. This was about 3 months after becoming a flight attendant back in 2005.  I knew it needed saving (and sharing)!

It reads:

BEHOLD THE BARF BAG

Hey everyone!

I thought I’d do my entry on this barf bag.

I thought I’d do my entry on this barf bag. You see, your barf bag is not only good for barfing in – people love to get messages on them! Nothing says “I love you” like a barf bag message.

So- you can propose to someone by writing “Will you marry me” on the bag and placing the ring inside! Or- you remember the little puppets that you made out of a brown sack in pre-school?

A barf bag is excellent to breathe into if you start to hyper-ventilate [si]. You can craft yourself a little hat… like a birthday hat if you so desire.

My point- barf bags are wonderful!!! And not just for barf!

ENJOY!!!

I once had this brilliant idea: I wanted to have celebrities that I meet on the plane sign the barf bag and then I wanted to take their picture holding the bag. Then I would auction it off for charity. I think I wanted to call it Barf Bags of Love. Classy, huh? I seriously think this could be a great thing, especially if I can get friends and coworkers to help. I may have to revisit this idea in the future.

joey-rory-dvd-1482274298“In March of 2016, we laid Joey to rest in the cemetery behind our farmhouse. Though this isn’t the path that we would’ve chosen to walk down, it is the path that’s been laid before us. So we put our faith in God and our hope in a future that we can’t see. We believe that God will give us a great story.” – Rory Feek

Tonight I watched the movie To Joey, With Love. This is the true story of the last few years of Joey Feek’s life. If you’re not familiar with her, she was half of the country music couple- Joey + Rory. A few years before her passing, Rory, her husband, decided to start recording video that he put on a blog. He said he felt that this was important to do. Little did he know that she would soon be pregnant with their daughter Indiana, and soon thereafter be diagnosed with cervical cancer.

I was so inspired by watching this movie! There was no doubt that I had to add it to my collection. Even with a sad ending, I rejoice when I see people who try their best to put the things of God first in their life. This is something that I need to remember to do in my own life.

Here is one of my favorite Joey + Rory song: Enjoy!

I’m new to the world of WordPress– this is the service that I’m now using to post to DavsAddiction.com. I just discovered that someone gives you what is called a “Daily Prompt” (The Daily Post). This is supposed to make you think or be inspired to write. I noticed today’s word is “Hesitate”. This is the perfect word for me to think about since I am the self-proclaimed world’s worst procrastinator. I am, but then I’m not.

This brings to mind a conversation that I recently had with my dad. He was telling me about one of my ancestors and how he was trying to get this man’s life story down. He expressed his frustration that so many members of our family aren’t as interested in knowing the stories in their family history. He said that when he dies, most of these stories will die with him. My response to him was, “People always make time for what is most important to them.”

I know there’s certain drives and passions that I was born with. I also know that so many of these passions I’ve been able to develop over time. For instance- for as long as I can remember, I have loved to travel. It just so happens that I’ve chosen a vocation that allows me to feed this passion. So- how much of this passion is nature and how much of it is nurture? Was this seed planted due to the fact that my parents’ would load all of us kids into the car and drive from Arizona to South Carolina every summer? Or does it stem from something earlier?

Here’s where I will try to tie this all together. I never hesitate or procrastinate the things the matter the most to me at that particular moment. These priorities do change often, I’m not sure if it’s my undiagnosed attention deficit disorder or if it’s something else. I don’t know how my brain works. I listen to the world around me and it can be frustrating when someone tells me my priorities should be different than what they are. Do I “go through the motions” even though my passion may be pulling me a different way?
